Reiki,
The Usui System of Natural Healing

Reiki (ray-kee) is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy, the energy which flows through all living beings. It's the life force of the individual. It can also be translated as transcendental spirit or God in me. Reiki is also the name for a simple, effective technique for healing through hands-on healing. It is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy work that supports physical, emotional and spiritual healing. It is a means of restoring balance in the individual boosting the normal healing process of the body and mind. Through compassionate touch, Reiki stimulates the body's regenerative capacity and promotes the body's own self-healing ability. It may be used for self-healing or the healing of others and pets. Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, nor is it a cure-all, but it can be safely used in conjunction with conventional medical methods enhancing the effectiveness of treatment. Reiki is not a religion, nor even a belief, but is a tool, and has been shown scientifically to speed the healing process of the mind and body.  See Cathy's approach to Reiki training, below.

Who Can Benefit from Learning Reiki?

Anyone who desires to empower themselves to heal the body/mind/spirit can benefit from learning Reiki in a Reiki workshop. It is an effective tool in pain management and healing chronic and acute conditions. It may be used to heal oneself, family members, or pets.

Cathy's Approach to Reiki Training in MD

In today's fast-paced world where many are willing to lay down their money in trade for a teaching or knowledge, SpiritDance® Healing Center likes to slow things down a bit. Where Reiki classes are a dime a dozen and certificates are sometimes handed out in assembly line fashion without regard for what's been learned or not, I've never taken the fast food approach.

In the days of Reiki's founding father, going from one level to the the next level in Reiki might take up to one year, and the student would learn from the teacher during the entire time. This developed the student's mastery of the concepts, techniques and spiritual practice. Although times have changed and our culture is different, SpiritDance® honors the original teachings of Dr. Usui, and honors the original precepts which includes the apprenticeship, and exemplifies the highest code of ethics.

Reiki is a loving art, and it is to be taught with the utmost integrity. Classes are not something that can be rushed through, and two or more Reiki levels cannot be learned when combined in a weekend, or even a week long workshop. It takes much more time to integrate the teachings than that. I have met individuals who introduce themselves as a "Reiki Master"-- someone who is supposedly able to pass on the attunements to other students and teach them-- but they cannot even pronounce the symbols learned in the Level II Degree. Students have told me that their original Reiki teacher admitted that he couldn't remember how to draw those symbols when he was teaching those symbols to them. In these and similar cases, what is being taught and how are the attunements being passed?

Here in the West, we are conditioned for instant gratification. An example would be, "Here's my money, now give me my certificate!" But what is a certificate without the proper training, and enough time for that information to sink in? After a three-year study course at one institution, for example, many who've gone through the course call themselves a shaman when they're done. But the medicine men and women that I know started their training and initiations when they were 5 to 7 years old, and they are now 60 to 80 years old ... and they do not call themselves shamans .... They tell me they are still learning.

If you'd like to learn Reiki the old fashioned way-- with honor, integrity and commitment-- I look forward to our working together, up to the level of training you desire, including the mentorship and your apprenticeship.
